A new study published in the November 2011 issue of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery finds that a community-based cancer screening program may increase the awareness of the dangers of smoking and reduce the risky habit. Dr. Larian of the CENTER for Advanced Head & Neck Surgery finds great promise in the results of this study. ?This study showed evidence that those who are given the knowledge about the dangers smoking imposes on the body are more likely to decrease their smoking habits,? said Dr. Larian.

The study population consisted of 568 adult NASCAR fans at the Atlanta Motor Speedway because they matched the demographic parameters. The participants were screened for symptoms of head and neck cancers by otolaryngologists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons. During the screening the physicians explained common signs and symptoms of head and neck cancers, the risks of tobacco use, and the benefits of quitting smoking with the participants. Six months the study followed up with the participants via a telephone survey. 59% of the participants who had initially been identified as smokers at the screening reported they now smoke fewer cigarettes per day as compared to six months ago, and 15% reported quitting completely. Based on these results, research concluded that there is evidence that cancer screenings can have an impact on smoking cessation, but further research should be conducted.2

Dr. Larian routinely treats patients with head and neck cancers as a result of years of smoking. ?Providing patients with education about the dangers of smoking at an earlier age will hopefully help them to quit the hazardous habit. I?m optimistic the findings in this study will prompt more health care officials, including doctors and government-funded programs, to create impactful awareness initiatives to educate patients,? explained Dr. Larian.
